CLIMATE
Haywood County
offers a healthy climate and an abundance of pure, cold spring water. The
summer days are rarely excessively hot. The evenings and nights are invariably
cool. Blessed with four full seasons, the mean annual temperature is 54.5°F.
The mean maximum temperature in July is 71.3°F, and the mean minimum
temperature in January is 38.9°F. The average rainfall is 45.13 inches, and the
average snowfall is 12.5 inches.
RECREATION
Haywood County
is truly a place that everyone wants to call home once they have visited.
Though not plagued with the rush of city living, all of the amenities are
available to residents, with the added benefits of the beautiful mountain
vistas and an interesting variety of recreations. Form mountain golfing at six
country clubs to hiking and camping, there is something for everyone.
Over one-third of the county includes
portions of the Pisgah National Forest, Shining Rock Wilderness Area and the
Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. There are
six campgrounds in the national parks and 18 commercial campgrounds throughout
the county. Within these preserves there are hiking trails and horse trails
that offer the true removal from civilization for a day, or longer, with
primitive camping available throughout. Lake Junaluska Assembly, the World Methodist
Religious Center,
is built around 250-acre Lake Junaluska, halfway between Waynesville and Maggie Valley.
A walking path that follows completely around the lake allows anyone the
opportunity to enjoy the mountain open-air experience. Within short drives of Haywood County are numerous lakes that afford
the water sports enthusiast an enjoyable outing. Catalooche Ski Slopes boasts
an elevation of 5,400 feet, offering eight ski slopes with trails for beginners
and experts. And the Maggie Valley Moonlight Race, one of the top ten 5-mile
races in America,
attracts world-class each year. The back-to-nature experience that allows us to
be in touch with our surroundings and ourselves is prevalent in Haywood County.
Along with several outdoor
activities, Haywood
County also offers
visitors and residents several arts and entertainment venues. Ghost Town in the
Sky, located in Maggie
Valley, is an "Old
West" amusement park offering visitors thirty different rides, including
the famous "Red Devil" roller coaster, and entertainment for the
entire family. Soco Garden Zoo is another attraction located in Maggie Valley.
The Stompin' Ground in Maggie
Valley is known as the
"Clogging Capital of the World." This 2,000-seat music hall features
the greatest mountain cloggers and country music ever assembled anywhere.
Folkmoot USA
is a July festival that features traditional dancing by performing groups from
around the world. Folkmoot USA
has been listed by the Southeastern Tourism Society as one of the top Twenty
Tourism Events in the Southeast. Musicians and dancers from around the globe,
dressed in their native costumes, perform through the Western
North Carolina area during this annual event. The Haywood Arts
Council programming includes plays, musical performances and school programs.
Several arts organizations, such as the Haywood Arts Repertory Theater, Haywood
Crafts Association and the Haywood Writers now provide arts programming in the
area of their specialty, assisted by the Arts Council.
HEALTH CARE
Haywood County
offers quality and comprehensive health care for its citizens. There are over
sixty physicians and approximately twenty dentists practicing in the county.
Specialties include family and internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology,
pediatrics, urology, gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology,
vascular surgery and dermatology. Haywood
County Regional
Medical Center
is located in the center of the county and is a modern, 200-bed acute care
facility.
EDUCATION
Haywood County
schools rank consistently among the top school systems in the state. This is a
result of the great commitment to education by the parents and the community at
large. Haywood Community
College is one of the finest community colleges in North Carolina and the Southeastern
United States. There are 32 curricula programs offered, as well as
hundreds of Adult Basic Education, Occupational Extension and Arts and Crafts
courses at various off-campus locations throughout Haywood County.
Western Carolina
University at Cullowhee and the University of North Carolina
at Asheville, both a part of the North Carolina
University System, are within close proximity of Haywood County
(each about a 30-minute drive from Waynesville).
